The women of Rashil wake up in the morning and pluck out cabbages and lettuce that they put into cardboard boxes and ship into trucks that go all the way to Delhi. All the way from the Himalayas, Rashil is a small village located in Himachal Pradesh. My stay there was with Shanti Aunty, who I spent time with the kitchen along with female friends. We chopped onions together and bonded over how much of chore kitchen work can be, and how nice it would be for men in the house to help. Kitchens in India are one of the most gendered spaces.Yet, Shanti Aunty's kitchen is one where everyone eats together in a floor table and cushions where she feeds everyone with love.
